Jose Gimenez's goal secured a late win for Uruguay against Egypt

It’s another exciting atmosphere in Russia as Egypt take on Uruguay in a group A encounter.

Uruguay dominated possession in the first 3 minutes of the opening stage of the first half. Caceres was put under pressure defensively but can’t keep the ball in play after tackle, though it shows Egypt are doing everything within their reach to limit the time Uruguay have on the ball.

Egypt are starting to to enjoy the game after the early pressure from the Uruguay. Cavani look threatening to the Egypt defense with the first attempt of the game, firing a low shot from outside the box that El – Shenawy managed to keep out comfortably. Egypt have done great defensively as they’ve kept Uruguay silent and finding thir rhythm in attack.

Egypt with their first attempt of the game as trezeguet forced Muslera into action for the first time. He chests the ball down to create some chance in the box but couldn’t get contact with the ball properly. Egypt are looking more dangerous on the attack but are yet to put muslera on test significantly.

Elneny is playing a different role in the middle of the park to his position with Arsenal, where he’s mainly used as an enforcer in front of defence. But Egypt, he’s been given a chance to roam forward. Bentancur looks to be the key Uruguay creatively but he’s often electing to play the ball sideways or back to a defender rather than crafting an attack.

Uruguay responded nicely with a better move of the ball around to find space but, like Egypt at the other end the ball hasn’t been up to standard. Diego Godin picked a surging run from the back, eases past elneny and he fed a pass through to De Arrascaeta, whose touch is poor and the ball trickles behind for a goal kick.

Suarez had three shots on in the game so far, one more than Egypt (2) have in total. None of them have caused problems though. Egypt had a chance in the wide area but the effort was wasted as that concludes the first half of the game.

Sanchez delivers a freekick and Gimenez rises highest in the area to head into the right – hand corner of the net. Heartbreak for Egypt.

The goal was very late and the performance wasn’t great from La Celeste but Oscar Tabanez’s side ve a crucial three points, with Jose Gimenez’s goal ending a 48 – year wait for Uruguay to win their opening game of a World Cup. Egypt impressed for the majority of the game, with Trezeguet and El – Shenawy shining, but they fell short at the end.

Pressure on Egypt will now increase ahead of their clash with Russia, where defeat could result in a premature end of their World Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Uruguay will fancy their chances of securing their spot in the knock – out stages when they tackle Saudi Arabia.
