Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's strike enough to end Carlo Ancelotti's unbeaten start
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game as Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund
brought an end to Bayern Munich's unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season with
a 1-0 win on Saturday evening which moves them to within three points of their
arch-rivals.
Aubameyang scored the
only goal of an entertaining encounter in the 11th minute to earn Thomas
Tuchel's men victory at the Westfalenstadion.
Bayern's first league
defeat under Ancelotti means they now trail league leaders Leipzig by three
points with three clubs, including Dortmund, just three points behind them.
Dortmund took the lead
after a prolonged spell of possession. Mario Gotze sent in a low cross which
Aubameyang reached at full-stretch to divert with his toe into the far corner
of Manuel Neuer's goal.
The lively Gotze was
making a nuisance of himself on numerous occasions and he got in around the
back of the Bayern defence again but could not find anybody up in support for
his cutback with Neuer out of the equation.
Aubameyang's burst of
pace down the right saw him make room away from former team-mate Mats Hummels
and his cross was met by a sweet Andre Schurrle volley, although his effort was
straight at a grateful Neuer.
An acrobatic Thiago
Alcantara effort was about as close as Bayern came to testing Roman Burki,
until a rebound off Franck Ribery almost sneaked inside the Swiss goalkeeper's
left-hand post.
Bayern were improving as
the first half drew to a close and the home team would have been happy to hear
the half-time whistle blow, just after Xabi Alonso headed straight at Burki.
Aubameyang headed over
from Marcel Schmelzer's cross early in the second half, but that proved to be a
rare chance for the hosts, who were soon forced onto the back foot.
Burki stretched to tip
Philipp Lahm's cross out of the reach of Robert Lewandowski as he prepared to
head in before Ribery found the back of the net with a neat backheel from
Thomas Muller's cross - but the offside flag was raised.
Alonso sent a
spectacular effort against the underside of the crossbar as Bayern's pressure
mounted.
Chances on the
counter-attack were inevitable and Aubameyang scuppered an excellent one with
20 minutes left when he was put clean through on goal, but he placed his shot
too close to Neuer, who turned it behind for a corner.
Douglas Costa and Renato
Sanches were both sent on to form an extremely attack-minded Bayern side and
they had the Westfalenstadion holding its breath in stoppage time when
Lewandowski headed inches wide from close range.
